Fabric Content, Explained
Class is back in session—and we’re diving into another topic designed to help you become a more informed and confident shopper, whether you’re browsing online or in-store.
In this week’s Style Edit, Kim and Sylvie break down fabric content - what it means and how to make sense of it, especially when you're shopping online and can’t touch and feel the garment. Understanding fabric content helps set the right expectations and minimizes disappointment when your order arrives.
You’ll typically find this information on the inside tag or within the product description online. And of course, if you’re unsure, we’re always here to help—just reach out!
One of the first things to look for: is it a woven or a knit? This distinction gives you insight into how the fabric is constructed and how it will wear.
Woven fabrics are made by weaving threads over and under each other in a crisscross pattern, creating more structure. Knit fabrics are made by looping yarn together, resulting in a softer, more flexible feel.
Next, look at the fiber content—this tells you what the fabric is made of (cotton, linen, jersey, ponte, etc.). While construction (woven vs. knit) tells you how it will feel and move, fiber gives insight into breathability, weight, and care. Understanding both helps you choose pieces that look good and work for your lifestyle.
